Why do families homeschool?

Parents can present all academic subjects from a Biblical perspective with spiritual training.
Each child receives individual attention and has his unique needs met.
Parents can control destructive influences.
Children develop confidence and independent thinking away from peer pressure.
Children have time to develop new interests.
Flexible scheduling allows time for many activities.

Are parents qualified to teach?

The short answer is yes!  You know your children better than anyone else and have the deepest love and concern for them. Educationally, one-to-one tutoring has many advantages over a classroom where one teacher tries to meet the needs of many children at different levels. You do not need to know everything in order to teach.

Is homeschool legal in every state?

Each state sets its own laws governing home education. It is important to obtain a copy of your state’s home school law.  We recommend HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) for all legal advice.

How can we teach several children at once?

Classes in Bible, literature, science and history can be taught together. Older students can do much of their work independently while younger ones receive necessary tutoring in the basics.

What materials are available?

Fine Christian and Traditional materials are available to home educators. You may order texts and teaching materials from the publishers or mail order companies. Please feel free to use our home school lending library, located in the basement of KCMI, for more ideas.

What about socialization?

Popular opinion assumes that children need interactions with peers to acquire social skills. Children can learn needed social skills by interacting with siblings, children and adults, through Church, and extracurricular activities.  VHSA also offers MANY options that offer socialization with others.

Can we homeschool a high school student?

Yes! Homeschooling during the high school years may seem overwhelming, but remember that there is plenty of help available, and many other homeschoolers have paved the way.
